![]() At a public bath, Archimedes noted that water was displaced when his body sank into the bath, and that the volume of water displaced equalled the volume of his body immersed in the water. Such as Archimedes’ story that led to the term eureka moment or effect.Īrchimedes (250 BC) was asked by the king to determine whether a crown was pure gold. ![]() The sudden understanding of a previously incomprehensible problem is quite common. Or, when friends tease you for your “bulb not shining”. He thinks some more, and suddenly the bulb glows bright, and Grampy shouts, “Ahhhh! Aha! I’ve got it!” That’s what parents, teachers and bosses mean when they tell you to “put on your thinking cap”. As Grampy thinks, the light bulb on his cap begins to brighten, and then goes dark. He puts on his thinking cap when there’s a problem to be solved. But those who have seen the Betty Boop cartoons of the 1930s will recall the character Grampy, who likes to invent contraptions out of household items. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary added aha moment in its 2012 edition. The phrase aha! moment has been made popular by Oprah Winfrey as she refers to it so often in her show. When Pope John Paul II visited the famous arena in 1979, more than 20,000 people headed to see the new Pope. The same year, George Harrison and Ravi Shankar organised a music benefit to raise funds for Bangladesh that had been doubly devastated by a civil war and cyclone. Or, that “Fight of the Century” at The Garden in 1971 when Muhammad Ali was defeated by Joe Frazier. In one of the most iconic performances, Marilyn Monroe sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. And, the unforgettable moments during the various sports and entertainment events held at MSG are christened Madison moments. The Garden is the venue for professional basketball matches, concerts, ice shows, circuses, etc. Situated atop Penn Station, the landmark MSG is a multipurpose indoor arena. So, the aha! moment (also eureka moment) is the instant of sudden insight or discovery, realisation, inspiration, epiphany, recognition or comprehension. It was in the course of reading about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Silicon Valley address, described as a repeat of his Madison moment performance in New York last year, that I became aware of this fact that Penn Station is stationed beneath the MSG. Having arrived there on the subway, I had not had the chance to see ground level. However, I did not know that the station sits beneath Madison Square Garden (MSG). In fact, it is the busiest passenger transportation facility not only in the US, but also in North America. While merging into the disciplined hustle and bustle, I was informed that the Penn Station is the main intercity railroad station of NY, serving over six lakh passengers a day. But, what are the Madison and aha! moments?Ī couple of years ago, when I was waiting to board the Amtrak train to Buffalo from the New York Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan, I learnt that the station is entirely underground. And the mention of Madison moment turned out to be my aha! moment. Much was made of Modi recreating the Madison moment at the Mecca of mega IT firms, the Silicon Valley, last week. While some moments are momentous and memorable, most are normal or common. Life is a line delineated by joining dots of moments.
